INDIANAPOLIS – The Creighton Bluejays made 22 3-point field goals on Sunday afternoon to set a new program and BIG EAST record. Outside shooting was the difference in the outcome with Creighton claiming a 96-49 win over Butler at DJ Sokol Arena.
How It Happened
Lauren Jensen hit three 3-pointers out of the gate for the Bluejays to give the home team an 11-4 lead. Butler countered the aerial attack with post scores from
Celena Taborn and
Sydney Jaynes but a fourth triple by Creighton, this time from Emma Ronsiek, forced Butler to call a timeout just three minutes into the action.
Kendall Wingler hit a 3-pointer from the left wing on Butler's first possession after the stoppage, but the duo of Jensen and Ronsiek would combine for 17 of Creighton's first 19 points to keep CU on top. The rest of the roster also got involved in this one to give the Bluejays a 33-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Wingler hit her third 3-pointer of the game in transition to open up the second quarter, but Jensen quickly answered with her sixth triple on the next trip down. A 7-0 Creighton scoring run was sparked by Jensen and gave the Bluejays a 40-18 advantage.
Creighton cooled off midway through the second quarter, but would add three more points with less than three to play on a Morgan Maly 3-pointer.
Emilia Sexton would also connect from long range giving each side 12 points in the second frame.
Jensen added a pair of free throws with just four seconds left in the first half. Those freebies gave her 20 points on the day and pushed the Creighton lead back up to 20 points at 47-27. Wingler had 11 at the break and Sexton was in the box score with seven.
Creighton opened the second half on an 8-2 scoring run. Tatum Rembao gave CU a lift after going scoreless over the first 20 minutes. Her two 3-point makes combined with another from Ronsiek gave the Bluejays a 61-35 lead.
Creighton added four more made 3-point field goals over the final 4:35 of the third to take a 78-40 lead into the fourth. The Bluejays set a new school record after three quarters by making 20 3-pointers. Those 20 makes came on 38 attempts (53%).
