@ButlerUBaseball 2022 Preview: Outfield

| By:
INDIANAPOLIS- Butler's outfield for the 2022 season will consist of some new faces that will be looking to make immediate impacts as starters. Scott Jones at centerfield and Kyle Van Liere, who is versatile and can play all three spots, are two transfers that will be starting in the outfield for the Bulldogs.

Jones is coming from Louisiana State University Eunice and Van Liere from Kellogg Community College.

"We went out and got Scott Jones to play centerfield for us in 2022," Head Coach Dave Schrage said. "He posted tremendous defensive stats while he was there, and we think he can do the same here. We are also happy to bring in Kyle Van Liere. Kyle is very fast and can play anywhere in the outfield for us."

James Gargano at left field is a returning piece to the Bulldog outfield as well. Gargano started in 36 games in the 2021 season in which he appeared as a senior. He ranked fourth on the team with a .277 batting average. Gargano recorded a team high 39 hits in 141 at-bats and led BU with 30 runs scored.

Nick Ortega is another returning player to the outfield who can play all three spots. During his 2021 senior season he played in 30 games making 18 starts. Ortega recorded nine hits in 55 at-bats to post a .164 batting average. He was mistake-free in the outfield to post a 1.000 fielding percentage.

In addition to the starters, Robbie McCargar, Quentin Markle, Jonathan Shoop, Jack Moroknek, and Kyle Pepiot, are expected to play innings in the outfield positions. Kyle Pepiot is the younger brother of former Butler standout Ryan who is currently with the LA Dodgers organization and is ranked their number two pitching prospect.

"To stay in close games, we can't give up three more free bases per game than our opponent," Schrage added. "Therefore, we felt like we needed to improve our ball club overall and that started with adding speed, being more aggressive on the base paths, and being better as a team defensively."
