CHICAGO – The Butler track and field teams currently sit in the top three of the standings after the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the Gately Indoor Track and Field Facility in Chicago.
Led by
Simon Bedard's first place finish in the 5000m (13:43.04), the Bulldog men are in second in the standings so far with 40 points behind only UConn (71).
Barry Keane finished just behind Bedard (13:43.81) to come in second in the race. Both marks broke the old BIG EAST Indoor Championships record of 13:51.23.
Zac Stanley had a podium finish in the long jump, with his 7.22m leap placing him second in a field of seven.
The women's team ends day one in third place with 28 points behind UConn (81.5) and Villanova (39.5).
Niki Ezeh and
Karmen Koch stood at second and third on the podium in the pentathlon. Ezeh's score of 3,829 beat her own program record of 3,678 set in 2020, while Koch finished close behind with 3,823. Ezeh topped the field of nine in the 60m hurdles (8.51) and shot put (13.10m), while Koch came in first in the high jump (1.66m) while placing top three in all five events.
Kami Hankins finished third in the 5000m race with a time of 16:18.87. She came within about a second of standing atop the podium.
In preliminary races,
Niki Ezeh qualified second in the 60m hurdles, while
Isaac Kane and
Jacob Uhl qualified in second and third, respectively in the 200m dash.
The Bulldogs will be back at it beginning Saturday at 10 a.m. for the final day of the Indoor Championships.
