INDIANAPOLIS – Butler will play at Bellarmine this Tuesday, March 29. The game will stream on the BU Knights Sports Network at 2 PM.
Â
Scouting Bellarmine
The Knights are 3-20 this season with victories over Gardner-Webb, Morehead State, and Central Arkansas. Bellarmine will step away from ASUN Conference action to host the Bulldogs. They are 1-5 over their last six games against conference foes.
Â
Matt Higgins and Jacob Mulcahy are the top two bats in the Bellarmine order. Mulcahy is hitting .301 with a team-high 28 hits in 23 games. Higgins provides a little more power with a similar average at .300. He has a team-best 11 doubles and five home runs this year for 20 RBI.
Â
Head Coach Larry Owens is in his ninth season at Bellarmine in 2022. The Knights first season in Division I and the ASUN Conference came in 2021.
Â
What a Week
Aaron Steinhart has hit a home run in four-straight games. His streak started on Tuesday, March 22 at #5 Tennessee. The BU designated hitter homered to left in the fourth inning against the Vols. He picked up where he left off on Saturday by homering again in the fourth inning against Northwestern to straight-away center field and matched that effort in the nightcap vs. Southern Illinois with a solo shot to center in the third. On Sunday, Steinhart increased the Butler lead over the Wildcats with a two-run home run over the wall in right during the second inning. Steinhart now has six home runs on the year. He hit two in the same game on March 1 at Northern Kentucky.
Â
Hit a Homer
Butler hit eight home runs last week over a four-game stretch. They hit three at #5 Tennessee, two vs. Northwestern on Saturday, one at Southern Illinois, and two Sunday vs. the Wildcats. Their last home run of the weekend was a memorable one with
Kollyn All taking Northwestern deep in the top of the ninth inning with two outs. All's second home run of the season gave BU an 11-10 lead that would hold over the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Double Figure Hit Total
The Bulldogs came up with 11 hits in the win over Northwestern. That game marked the 10th time this year that BU has recorded at least 10 hits in a game. Their season-high total of 13 was reached twice this year (Prairie View A&M, NKU). Those 11 hits vs. the Wildcats helped Butler produce 11 runs, just one shy of tying their season-high total of 12 which came at Murray State.
Â
Reached Base Streak
Billy Wurch has reached base safely in 13-straight games for the Bulldogs. The BU infielder is tied with
Aaron Steinhart for the team lead in walks this season (12).
Â
On the Move
Travis Holt leads Butler with 13 stolen bases this season. As a team BU has swiped 45 bags, 15 more than the opposition. The Bulldogs are much more aggressive this season than last. In 2021 they only stole 27 bases all year.
Â
McDaniel on the Mound
Cole McDaniel is slated to get the start for Butler on Tuesday. The left-handed freshman is 1-2 on the mound this year with a 3.79 ERA. Over 19 innings, McDaniel has 14 strikeouts and has only walked four batters. Tuesday will be his fifth start of the year.
Â
New Season-High Totals
Butler hit five doubles and posted 22 total bases in their victory over Northwestern on Sunday.
Ryan O'Halloran was responsible for two doubles against the Wildcats.
James Gargano also tied a single-game season-high mark with three runs scored.
Â
Better Defensively
Butler didn't commit an error in either contest vs. Northwestern over the weekend. Heading into the action at Carbondale, BU had only gone without an error in two games (at NKU, at Jacksonville).
Scott Jones is the last every day starter on the roster to hold a perfect fielding percentage.
