INDIANAPOLIS – Butler women's basketball head coach
Austin Parkinson added a talented floor general to the program this week. 5-7 point guard Shay Frederick will join the Bulldogs for the 2022-23 season as a graduate transfer from Valparaiso. During her four-year career as a Beacon, Frederick posted 1,264 points, 493 assists and 164 steals.
Frederick was a three-year starter at Valpo that ended her time on campus ranked second all-time in assists (493) and eighth in scoring (1,264). A two-time First Team All-MVC selection, Frederick played in 116 games at Valpo and capped of her senior season averaging 11.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per contest. Frederick led the Valley in assists in consecutive seasons and was the first Valpo player to earn All-MVC accolades multiple times since 2005-06.
"We are so thrilled to have an experienced point guard like Shay join our Butler family," Parkinson stated. "Her basketball IQ and ability to score the basketball make her very hard to defend; however, her best attribute is her knack for making everyone around her better as she led the MVC in assists per game the past two seasons. I also like the fact she always plays on balance and has deep range."
Frederick made 192 3-pointers at Valpo placing her fifth all-time in program history. She made at least 39 3-pointers in every season and knocked down 55 from behind the arc in 2020-21. Frederick also earned post-season awards off the court for the Beacons. She is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team selection as a marketing major (3.9 GPA).
Originally from Greenville, Wisconsin, Frederick was a four-time first team all-conference selection coming out of Hortonville High School. She led her team to its first state tournament final four appearance in 30 years as a junior and senior. A McDonald's All-American nominee, Frederick finished her Hortonville career as the school's all-time leader in scoring, assists, steals and 3-pointers (boys and girls). She averaged 16.7 points and 5.2 assists per game as a senior to end her prep career with 1,451 points, 403 assists, 205 steals and 282 made 3-pointers.
