Round 2 Pairings
Pine Mountain, Ga. – A strong closing stretch has the Bulldogs in second place after the opening 18 of the 2022 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship Presented by JEEP.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot two-under 286 Monday at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Butler's four counted scores Monday combined to go eight-under on holes 16-18, which moved the Bulldogs from the bottom half of the leaderboard into the No. 2 position.
Butler's team performance was headlined by the individual performance of
Raymond Sullivan. His five-under 67 has him alone in second place. He carded seven birdies Monday on the 7,081-yard Mountain View Course. Sullivan is three shots off the lead of Marquette's Max Lyons (64). Lyons tied the BIG EAST Championship Record for 18 holes with an 8-under 64 to take the lead on the leaderboard. He made six consecutive birdies on holes No. 8 through No. 13 and nine birdies overall. Lyons, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., tied the record set by Marquette's Matt Haase in the final round of the 2009 Championship.
Georgetown's Brad Whitaker and Caleb Manuel of UConn are tied for third at 68 (-4). Eleven players (out of a field of 50) were in red numbers Monday.
As a team, Marquette holds the lead after the first round at 281 (-7). That is a five-shot cushion over Butler. The Bulldogs are one shot ahead of UConn (287) and two shots clear of both Creighton and Seton Hall (288).
Butler's
Daniel Tanaka is tied for 12
th after an even-par 72 in the opening round. He birdied three of the final four holes Monday and had five birdies on the day.
Michael Tanaka finished at one-over 73, which included two birdies over the final three holes. He is tied for 20
th.
Damon Dickey was six-over on the front nine and was still at that score through 15 holes Monday. Dickey then eagled the 543-yard, par-5 16
th and birdied both No. 17 and 18 to make up four of those shots and finish the round at 74 (+2). He is currently tied for 25
th.
Nick Williams was Butler's fifth golfer in the opening round. He carded an 81 (+9) and is in 49
th.
The three-day, 54-hole event continues Tuesday from Georgia. Butler and Marquette are the first teams to tee off, with the first group scheduled for 8:20 a.m. ET. Live stats will be available via GolfStat.
The BIG EAST team winner earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Should the individual champion not be a member of the championship team, he will also earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field as an individual.
