Final Results

STORRS, Conn. – Butler capped off the 2022 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by JEEP in grand fashion, as the Bulldog men broke the UConn facility record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:09.48.

That win in the final event of the day propelled the Bulldogs into a third-place team finish on the men's side. Butler finished with 109 points, trailing only 2022 champion UConn (258) and Georgetown (125). Butler was one point ahead of Villanova (108) and three points clear of DePaul (106).

Butler's 4x400 team included Zac Stanley, Tom Pitkin, Isaac Kane and Jacob Uhl. The mark broke the school record in the event, which was set earlier this season (3:10.83).

The other BIG EAST title for the Bulldogs on Saturday came from Rebecca Coan, who captured the heptathlon with 5,445 points. That total was a lifetime best for the graduate transfer. Coan won the first two heptathlon events on Friday (the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump) to build a lead that she would never relinquish. Her time of 2:20.40 in the 800 meters, the final event of the competition, was good for second in that event but enough to give her 500-point victory over second-place Emily Lavarnway of UConn. Coan's total also broke the Butler school record, which was held by teammate Karmen Koch (5,264 points in 2021). Koch finished the 2022 competition in fourth with 5,020 points.

Both Coan's point total and the men's 4x400-meter relay time were the best BIG EAST Championship marks since the conference was reconfigured prior to the 2013-14 season.

Butler's third-place result on the men's side was aided heavily by a number of podium finishes on Saturday.

Jesse Hamlin finished second in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:46.88. His time of 52.19 over the final 400 meters was almost enough to get to the line first, but he was edged by UConn's Eric Van Der Els (3:46.64). Hamlin held off Georgetown's Jack Salisbury by a little more than two tenths of a second.

Kane ran to a second-place finish in the 200 meters, registering a time of 21.34. Joshua Paige of Georgetown captured the event at 21.09.

Butler's men took second in the 4x800 relay, posting a time of 7:29.17. Georgetown won the event in 7:23.95. The Bulldog quartet was comprised of Liam Dennis, Matthew Wigelsworth, Chandler McGaha, and Hamlin.

Uhl picked up a podium finish in the 400 meters, crossing the line in a time of 47.26 to finish third. Jarel Terry of DePaul picked up the title in a time of 46.37.

Jack Elder finished third in the decathlon with a total of 6,745 points. UConn athletes Jordan Torney (7,477) and Benjamin Grosse (7,329) took the top two spots. Elder's performance was highlighted by second-place results in both the 400 meters and the 110-meter hurdles.

Joey Gareis was third in the triple jump, posting a distance of 46 feet, 7.5 inches (14.21 meters). UConn's Marc Morrison won the event at 14.60 meters.

Butler's men also picked up Saturday points in the following:
  • Matthew Wigelsworth in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 1:49.65 to finish fourth.
  • The 4x100-meter relay, finishing fourth in a time of 41.28.
  • Pitkin finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles.
  • Zac Stanley joined Uhl in scoring points in the 400 meters; he was fifth in a time of 48.28.
  • Pierre-Louis Detourbe edged Ryan Gallagher of Providence by less than a hundredth of a second to take eighth in the 5,000 meters. He crossed the line in a time of 14:37.78. Haftu Strintzos of Villanova won the race in 14:13.58.

On Friday, Butler men went 1-2 in the 10,000 meters, with Barry Keane snapping the tape in 29:27.12 followed by fellow Bulldog Evan Byrne in 29:29.26. For Keane, it was his third consecutive BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meters.

Butler entered Saturday's competition in second place on the men's side. UConn had the Day 1 lead with 101.5 points, followed by Butler at 41.

On the women's side, Butler finished eighth in the team standings with a total of 43 points. UConn won the title with 209. Joining Coan in registering points Saturday included the following:
  • The Bulldogs placed fifth in both the 4x100 relay (47.16) and 4x800 relay (8:56.04).
  • Coan and Koch also placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the high jump. Coan cleared a height of 5 feet, 6.5 inches (1.69 meters), while Koch got over at 5 feet, 4.5 inches (1.64 meters).
  • Kami Hankins (16:42.20) and Mia Beckham (16:44.45) went 7-8 in the 5,000 meters
  • Rebecca Collester finished eighth in the 200 meters, clocking a time of 24.55.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team finished seventh (3:55.46).
The Bulldogs will wait to see which student-athletes qualify for the NCAA East Regional, which will be contested in Bloomington, Ind., beginning May 25.
