Travis Holt and
Derek Drees were selected to the 2022 All-BIG EAST Second Team on Wednesday afternoon. Holt earned the recognition as a shortstop and Drees earned the honor as a weapon out of the Butler bullpen.
Holt led Butler in hits (71), doubles (13), total bases (99) and stolen bases (20) in 2022. He hit .309 overall and .298 in BIG EAST contests. A starter in all 56 games, Holt had 23 multi-hit games as a graduate student and recorded multiple RBI's in a single-game on four occasions. He scored 37 runs, drove in 21 runs and hit his fifth and final home run of the year to help the Bulldogs defeat the Pirates on May 21.
Holt hit home runs in back-to-back games in mid-March to collect his first two round trippers of the season. His first homer was recorded at Bulldog Park in the final game of a series against Western Illinois. The next day, Holt would hit another at Illinois. 18 extra base hits helped him post a .430 slugging percentage. Holt also walked 22 times to bump his on-base percentage to .377.
As a shortstop, Holt was great for Butler defensively. He held a .948 fielding percentage during the regular season and only committed one error over 21 BIG EAST games (.989). For the season, Holt made 76 puts outs while assisting on 145 outs.
The Bulldogs were at their best defensively with Drees on the mound. The redshirt senior appeared in 17 games, making two starts. He posted a 4-3 record with a 1.27 ERA. Drees came out of the bullpen to record a team-high four saves for BU. Opponents only hit .205 against him.
Drees recorded 46 strikeouts over 35.1 innings of action. He limited the opposition to just five earned runs! In BIG EAST action, Drees recorded three wins and held a 1.80 ERA. He struck out 21 batters over 20 full innings of work.
Saves for Drees came at Jackson State, vs. Western Illinois, vs. Eastern Michigan and vs. Eastern Illinois. He made starts at St. John's and at home vs. UConn and recorded wins against Northwestern, Villanova, Georgetown and Seton Hall.
The redshirt senior struck out a season-high eight batters at Bulldog Park on April 15 against Georgetown. He threw a season-high 85 pitches that day, covering a season-high five innings of action.
