Keane Earns Third BIG EAST Honor with Record Breaking 5K Race

Barry Keane was named the BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week for his record breaking 5000m run last week at the Payton Jordan Invitational, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Keane finished third in the elite field with a time of 13:26.29 on Friday night in Stanford, Calif., to break the old school record by more than four seconds (13:30.55 by Euan Makepeace in 2021). The time is currently the best in the BIG EAST and ranks No. 11 in NCAA Division I.

The graduate student from Waterford, Ireland, now holds both the indoor and outdoor Butler records in the 5k after clocking in at 13:25.96 during this past indoor season.

The recognition is Keane's third of the school year after also earning Track Athlete of the Week on Dec. 14 during the indoor season then again on March 29 early in the outdoor season.
