A portion of the Bulldogs' roster got in their final competition prior to next week's conference championships as Butler welcomed a small field for the Stay Lyons Invitational Friday.

The event, named after the Butler hall of fame coach who led Butler's cross country and track programs for 30 years before retiring in 1995, was held at the Northview Church Course in Carmel, Ind.

A vast majority of Butler's athletes who are expected to run in the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships next weekend focused on their training and preparation for that race and did not compete in the Stan Lyons event.

Sean Robertson won the men's race, a field that included 28 runners from Butler, Bradley, Illinois State and IUPUI. Several schools also had runners participating unattached. Sean Byrnes, one of those runners competing unattached for Butler, was second; he was followed by Liam Dennis.

The men's race ended up being slightly more than 7K.

On the women's side, Morgan Werner was the top finisher among a small field that included only runners from Butler. She finished the 5K course in a time of 18:46.3. Teammate Renate Toldo was second.

The Butler men are ranked No. 30 in this week's USTFCCCA national poll.

The 2023 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Wayne Dannehl Course in Kenosha, Wis.
