Butler Preps for Two Home Games Before Thanksgiving Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs are 1-1 at the start of the 2023-24 campaign and will move forward with a pair of home games in the coming days. Austin Peay will play inside Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon at 5 PM and the Bulldogs will host Roosevelt for an 11 AM tip on Monday, Nov. 20. Admission is free to all fans for the game against the Lakers. The contest will double as Butler's Kid's Day game!

Scouting Austin Peay                                 
The Governors are 1-2 at the start of the season with a recent win over Kentucky (68-63). Anala Nelson scored a career-high 21 points against the Wildcats to help Austin Peay claim their first victory over an SEC opponent since 1997! The road win followed two setbacks at home. Austin Peay lost their opener to Trevecca (75-59) and were edged by Chattanooga four days later 57-52. Head Coach Brittany Young is in her second season at the helm of the program. She guided the Govs to 20-13 overall record last year becoming the fourth coach in program history to reach 20 wins at Austin Peay.
 
All-Time Series vs. Austin Peay                                                           
Butler leads the all-time series against Austin Peay 3-2. The Govs won the first meeting on their home court in 1997 (71-70) and came up with a 68-65 win in the last meeting at Hinkle Fieldhouse (2021). Two of Butler's three wins over Austin Peay were played at Hinkle Fieldhouse. They won 97-68 in 1997 and 75-54 in the season opener in 2017. These two programs also faced off in the first game of the Billiken Classic in St. Louis back in 2004. Butler won that matchup 69-52.
 
Last Game vs. Austin Peay                                                                                 
Austin Peay outscored Butler 18-7 in the third quarter to earn a three-point win over Butler on Nov. 20, 2021. Kendall Wingler started in that game and hit three 3-pointers to end the game with nine points. She added three rebounds and two assists. Turnovers were the difference in the outcome as 22 BU miscues led to 20 Austin Peay points.
 
Scouting Roosevelt                                                                                
The Lakers are 1-4 after the first five games of the 2023-24 season. The team most recently took a home loss to Northern Michigan on Wednesday (75-61). Kencia Levasseur came off the bench to lead the Lakers with 12 points and six rebounds. Brilan McCory joined her in double figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. A NAIA program out of Chicago, Roosevelt competes in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Monday's game will go down as the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
 
Elementary School Kids Day                                                                
Monday's game against Roosevelt on Nov. 20 will feature an 11 AM tip time to accommodate the team's Elementary School Kids Game. Butler partnered with the NCAA's Readers Become Leaders Program to promote the importance of reading. Over 1,000 local students will be in attendance.
 
Strande's Strong Start                                                                          
Caroline Strande has scored in double figures in each game this season for the Bulldogs. She hit six shots at Iowa State to net a team-high 17 points and made five shots in the home opener vs. Detroit to end that game with 11. Strande had a similar start to her BU career a year ago, scoring 12 points in the first two games of the 2022-23 campaign. Over 32 games at BU, Strande has scored in double figures 12 times.
 
Career Milestones                                                                                               
Sydney Jaynes needs five more assists to reach 100 in her career. Kendall Wingler is three 3-pointers shy of 100 and six rebounds shy of 200.
 
Sharpshooter                                                                                         
Jordan Meulemans has made 46 shots during her BU career with 37 of those makes coming from 3-point range. She leads the team with five made 3-pointers over the team's first two games and has made a 3-pointer in five-straight games dating back to last season.
 
Behind The Arc                                                                                       
The Bulldogs have made at least six 3-point field goals in each game this season. A year ago, BU made six or more triples 22 times in the span of 30 games. The team caught fire seven times in 2022-23, hitting 10 or more 3-pointers in a single game. The 'Dawgs went 5-2 in those matchups.
 
Kent Keeps Her Streak Alive                                                                
Graduate transfer Rachel Kent has started in every game of her collegiate career (112). Kent started in 51 games over two seasons at Saint Louis and 59 games at IUPUI before arriving at Butler. She is a 40 percent career 3-point shooter and needs just six points vs. Austin Peay to reach 1,300.
 
3-Point Threat                                                                                        
The Bulldogs led the BIG EAST Conference and ranked eighth in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage during the 2022-23 season by making 37.6 percent of their shots from distance. Butler made 227 3-pointers, the fourth-most in the league. They averaged 7.6 made 3-pointers per game, tying DePaul for the second-best mark in the conference.
 
Indiana All-Stars                                                                                                   
The Bulldogs have six Indiana All-Stars on the 2023-24 roster. All three incoming freshmen (Norman, Makalusky, Carter) earned the recognition in 2023 and Lilly Stoddard was honored in 2022. Sydney Jaynes and Ari Wiggins round out the group from the 2021 class.

Butler will spend their Thanksgiving Weekend in Stockton, California playing in the Tiger Turkey Tip-Off hosted by Pacific. Two games will take place for the 'Dawgs on the West Coast trip with BU playing Pacific on Friday at 6:30. The following day they will take on St. Thomas at 4 PM.
