Winthrop Outlasts Butler 10-9 in Triple Overtime on Sunday

Harrogate, Tenn. — The Butler women's lacrosse team came up short in triple overtime to Winthrop on Sunday, losing 10-9. The Bulldogs fall to 2-3 on the season while Winthrop is now 3-3.

How it happened:

The Bulldogs started things off quickly on the offensive end with Leah Rubino scoring a goal off a Kayleigh Colleary assist just 31 seconds into the game. The Colleary-Rubino connection sparked again a few minutes later to put the Dawgs up 2-0 early. Both teams traded goals before the first period ended with Butler up 3-2.

The second period proved to be a back-and-forth affair. A quick goal by Elise Latham put the Bulldogs ahead 4-2. Winthrop rattled off two goals to tie things up at 4-4 before Tessa Fackrell scored her first goal of the season to put the Bulldogs back on top. Butler responded to two scores by Winthrop with goals by Emmie Ridgeway and Kaley Attaway, making the score 7-6 at halftime.

Winthrop's offense came alive after the break, outscoring the Bulldogs 3-1 in the third period. A free position goal by Attaway was the lone point for Butler as they trailed by one entering the fourth.

Both defenses held strong for much of the fourth period. The only shot to find the back of the net in the period was a shot by Fackrell with 1:22 left to play. The game reached overtime with a score of 9-9.

Neither team found the net after the first eight minutes of extra play. In the third overtime period, Winthrop's Scarlet Cifarelli scored the game-winning goal following a Butler yellow card.
