The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday that the Butler men's cross country and track and field teams currently rank 18th in the John McDonnell Program of the Year.

In the 2023 USTFCCCA Mid-Year Update standings, the Bulldog men received 71 points after top finishes in the 2022 cross country and 2022-2023 indoor track and field seasons.

"In an era of our sport dominated by historically strong Power Five institutions it is remarkable to see our men amongst the elite programs in the nation," head coach Matt Roe stated. "This is an accomplishment based solely on merit. Our success at the NCAA Championships has elevated us to new heights. I couldn't be prouder of our men who consistently and relentlessly punch above their weight. We have an incredible group. I am excited for what is to come this spring."

Butler joins BYU, Northern Arizona, and Princeton as the only non-Power 5 programs to be named in the rankings.

The Bulldogs ranked in the top 20 nationally at the end of the indoor season, including 17th in the 3,000 meters and 20th in the 5,000 meters. In addition, Butler ranked eighth nationally in team GPA in the fall.

Teams eligible for the award must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at each NCAA Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
