The Butler women's lacrosse team defeated Detroit Mercy for the second time this season, 11-9, on Saturday. The Bulldogs are now 3-4 on the season while the Titans drop to 1-5.
How it happened:
Butler led things off in the first period with consecutive goals by Leah Rubino. Detroit Mercy's Marina Butler responded with a goal at the 7:52 mark. The Bulldogs followed that up with a goal from Kate Katropsky, her sixth of the season. Detroit Mercy scored again to close out the period with a score of 3-2.
In the second, three different players scored a goal for Detroit Mercy. Greer Bireley was the only Bulldog to score in the period, netting her second goal of the season. Detroit Mercy took a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
Coming out of the half, a goal by Peyton Moroney tied things up for Butler. Detroit Mercy regained the lead with two goals from Leah Bodnar. Back-to-back goals from KK Callaghan and Rubino tied the score once again, making it 7-7 at the end of the third period.
The fourth period was all Bulldogs, as Callaghan, Patricia Lynn and Campbell Connors all found the back of the net to give Butler a three-goal cushion with 4:30 left to play. Detroit Mercy scored their ninth goal with 1:20 remaining, and a scoreless final 80 seconds made the final score 11-9.
