How It Happened
Butler led Georgetown 7-6 at the first media timeout and would outscore the Hoyas 12-4 over the final six minutes of the opening quarter to jump out to a 17-10 lead. The BU advantage didn't hold however as Georgetown opened the second quarter on a 10-3 scoring run to tie the game at 20-20. Graceann Bennett gave Georgetown their first lead of the second frame and the Hoyas would lead the Bulldogs 26-22 at the half.
Claude was the driving force behind the Hoya attack with 12 points and Jaynes led the Bulldogs with nine. BU shot 26 percent from the field in the first half and were limited to just one made field goal in the second quarter (Mortag). Despite the shooting woes, Butler's defense held Ransom and Fauntleroy to just four combined points over the opening 20 minutes.
A 6-0 BU run in the third quarter tied the game at 28-28, but the Hoyas would counter with a 9-0 run to take a 37-28 lead into the fourth. Butler chipped away at the GU lead and got the game to five points with six to play, but they would not get any closer allowing Georgetown to advance.
Butler ends the 2022-23 campaign with an 11-19 overall record.
Postgame Parkinson Quotes
You've got to give credit to Georgetown. They were more physical than we were on the defensive side of things and in the second half, I think we gave up 14 second-chance points. In a low-scoring game you can't give up easy baskets like that. I was proud of how our kids fought in the fourth quarter. We played Georgetown twice, beat them both times, but I don't think we were that much better than them. It was kind of a wash. So coming into this game, we knew we were going to have to step up and they did a great job. We're eighth in the country in 3-point percentage and we only got 10 shots off. A lot of that is credit to them.
Stat of the Game
Butler made 17 of their 23 free throw attempts (73.9).
