Azusa, Calif. — Butler's Barry Keane and Angelina Ellis each broke Butler program records on the opening night of the 2023 Bryan Clay Invitational. Thursday kicked off the west coast trip for a group of Bulldogs.
Keane's mark of 28:04.66 in the 10,000 meters was more than six seconds faster than Butler's previous best mark. Keane finished sixth among an elite field. Dylan Jacobs of Tennessee got to the line first in a time of 28:01.53, edging BYU's Casey Clinger by .14 of a second.
Keane topped the school record of 28:11.02, set by All-American Erik Peterson in 2017.
Ellis broke the 18-year-old school record in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase. Her mark of 9:44.57 crushed the Butler mark of 9:53.24, set by All-American and Olympian Victoria Mitchell in 2005.
Ellis placed second to New Mexico's Elise Thorner, who set a new Bryan Clay Invitational and stadium record at 9:39.39. Thorner and Ellis have the top two times in the NCAA so far this outdoor season.
Laure Bertrand finished 19th in the women's 10,000 meters, registering a time of 34:06.93. For Bertrand, it was her collegiate debut in the 10k and her time already places her fourth on Butler's list.
Wiktoria Klebowska joined Ellis in the women's steeplechase field, finishing 43rd overall in a time of 10:26.55. Matthew Forrester participated in the men's steeplechase, and his time of 8:55.61 was 30th.
Butler's Jack Elder currently leads Group C after the first day of the men's decathlon with 3,740 points.
Zac Stanley won the 400 meters at 49.80 at the Cal State LA Twilight.
Isaac Kane earned seventh at the Cal State event in the men's 200 meters at 21.91.
Bulldogs continue competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational through Saturday.
