Keane’s Historic Performance Highlights Day 1 of the Big East Outdoor Championships

Villanova, Pa. — The Butler track and field team got off to a historic start during the first day of the Big East Outdoor Championships.  

Barry Keane claimed the Big East title in the men's 10,000 meters at 29:10.62. Keane became the first middle or long-distance student-athlete to win an event four times in the Big East Outdoor track and field history. 

Will Minnette and Jack McMahon followed just behind Keane in fourth and fifth with times of 29:40.13 and 29:43.86.

On the women's side, Laure Bertrand and Abby Olson secured points for Butler in the 10,000 meters. Bertrand earned a spot on the podium in third at 34:57.53 while Olson finished fifth at 35:58.86, respectively. 

After the first five events of the men's decathlon, Jack Elder currently sits atop the standings with 3653 points. Elder registered wins in the men's 100 meters (10.97) and 400 meters (48.59) along with third-place finishes in the shot put (12.00 meters) and long jump (6.52 meters).

In the women's heptathlon, the three student-athletes have been performing well during the first four events. Karmen Koch and Niki Ezeh currently hold positions in in second and third after scoring 3029 and 3005 points. 

Koch came in second in the high jump (1.62 meters) and 200 meters (26.07) and third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.86). Ezeh secured the silver in the 100-meter hurdles (14.81) and shot put (12.12 meters) along with a bronze in the high jump (1.59 meters) and 200 meters (26.61). 

Remi Beckham rounded out the Butler students athletes with a score of 2475 points, respectively after the first day of events.
