Scouting St. John's
The Red Storm head into Wednesday night's contest with a 10-8 overall record that includes a 4-2 mark against BIG EAST foes. St. John's has conference wins over Villanova, Marquette, Providence and Xavier. They recently lost at home to UConn and were also defeated at Creighton on Dec. 30. Unique Drake is the leading scorer on the team (18.8), but she was limited to just four points in the setback to UConn. Drake still ranks second in the league in made field goals and third in points per game. She has made 47 3-pointers this year (second in BIG EAST) and ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in 3-point percentage. The Johnnies gave up 92 points to the Huskies, but still rank third in the conference in scoring defense (56.6). They are also a solid free throw shooting team, connecting on 75 percent of their attempts. Jailah Donald and Ber'Nyah Mayo came off the bench in their last game to lead the Red Storm in scoring. Donald had 11 and Mayo was in the box score with 10.
All-Time Series
St. John's leads Butler in the all-time series 15-4. Butler's last win over the Johnnies came on Feb. 1, 2019 in overtime at St. John's. The Bulldogs won the contest 73-68 giving them the regular season sweep over the Red Storm. STJ has won the last seven meetings, but each game last year was close (67-65 at St. John's / 65-57 at Hinkle Fieldhouse).
Last Meeting vs. St. John's
St. John's earned a 67-65 victory the last time these two programs met. There were 18 lead changes and seven ties in a game that came down to the wire. BU had the ball down two with 10.3 seconds left. They called timeout to advance the ball, but were unable to score, allowing STJ to win their 13th-straight game at home.
Sydney Jaynes was a top performer for BU with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds. Unique Drake came off the bench for STJ and scored a game-high 16 points in 31 minutes of playing time. Drake made seven shots, dished out four assists and pulled down three rebounds.
A Look at Last Week
The Bulldogs took conference losses to Creighton and Villanova last week scoring 53 points in Omaha and 54 on Saturday at home to Villanova.
Sydney Jaynes and
Caroline Strande each averaged 10 points per game last week while
Rachel Kent was close behind at 9.5. BU went 9-for-26 from 3-point range while their opponents' shot 44 percent from distance (20-45).
Double-Double
Caroline Strande became the first Bulldog to record a double-double this season with 12 points and 10 rebounds vs. Villanova. Strande's last double-double game came at Seton Hall on Dec. 31, 2022. She had 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Pirates.
Grab the Board
Caroline Strande is the top rebounding guard in the BIG EAST Conference. She has led Butler in rebounding 11 times (16 games) this season and four times over the team's first five BIG EAST games.
Gritty Not Pretty
The first team to score 50 points will most likely be in the driver's seat for the win on Wednesday night. Both the Bulldogs and the Red Storm are averaging 54 points per game against BIG EAST foes. Butler is 7-1 this season when keeping their opponent under 60 points but are just 1-7 when they go over 60.
Stretch the Defense
Sydney Jaynes matched her career-high 3-point total against St. John's on Feb. 9, 2022 when she stepped back to hit three 3-pointers against the Red Storm. Jaynes also hit three triples against Illinois on Dec. 11, 2022. The BU forward has only made five 3-pointers this season, but she went 1-for-2 in her last game.
Flip The Script
Butler will aim to win on the road for just the second time this season. The Bulldogs notched a 59-51 win at Wisconsin on Dec. 3, but it won't be easy on Wednesday as the Johnnies are 6-2 at Carnesecca Arena this year. Their home losses came to Penn State and UConn.
Fantastic Freshman
It only took
Cristen Carter 15 games to record 50 rebounds for the Bulldogs. The freshman from Ben Davis nearly has as many offensive rebounds (24) as defensive (27). Carter is also shooting 50 percent from the field. She has 52 points in her collegiate career (3.5 ppg).
300 3-Pointers
Rachel Kent only needs three more 3-pointers to reach 300 in her collegiate career. The graduate transfer made 78 as a true freshman at St. Louis and hit 70 in her first season at IUPUI after transferring before the start of the 2021-22 campaign. Kent is a 40 percent career 3-point shooter and she ranks second on the team this year with 39 makes from behind the arc.
2 for 20
Jordan Meulemans and
Caroline Strande became the first Bulldog teammates to score 20 points or more in the same game since Feb. 28, 2020. Meulemans scored a team-high 23 points against Chicago State on Dec. 10 and Strande scored a career-high 22 points. The last Bulldog duo to score 20 each in the same game prior to this season was Kristen Spolyar and Kat Strong. Spolyar had 28 at St. John's and Strong posted 21.
Tied a Team Record
Jordan Meulemans made eight 3-pointers in the win over St. Thomas to match the single-game high in the BIG EAST this season. She ended the contest going 8-for-10 from behind the arc to score a career-high 24 points. Meulemans was just one 3-pointer shy of tying the single-game BU individual record and the 'Dawgs tied their team record with 16 made 3-pointers in the victory.
