Butler Opens Dorado Beach Collegiate with Nine-Under 279 Sunday

The Bulldogs fired a nine-under 279 in the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate Sunday in Puerto Rico.
 
Butler's performance is good for eighth among the 17-team leaderboard. Host UNC Greensboro has a one-shot lead over West Virginia with 36 holes to play over the next two days. UNCG shot an 18-under 270 Sunday.
 
Butler had four players in red numbers in the opening round, led by Derek Tabor's three-under 69. He had six birdies on the par-72 Sugarcane Course at Dorado Beach, which is set up at 7,112 yards. Tabor is tied for 21st in the field.
 
Will Horne, Damon Dickey and Daniel Tanaka each carded two-under 70s in the opening round. They are part of a group that is tied for 34th.
 
Leo Zurovac and Henry Quinn each shot four-over 76. Zurovac's card included a pair of eagles. Quinn is playing as an individual.
 
Kent State's Chris Vandette shot a round of 64 Sunday to hold a one-shot lead.
 
Monday's shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available via GolfStat.
