Raleigh, N.C. — The Butler track and field team completed the final two days of competition at the Raleigh Relays. This competition lasted from Thursday to Saturday and featured some of the most prestigious collegiate competitions for distance events in the country.Â
According to head coach Matt Roe, "no team won more sections in the distance events this weekend then our men in the entire meet."
On Thursday,
Jesse Hamlin beat out 197 athletes to win in the men's 5,000 meters. As of Mar. 30, his mark of 13:31.00 still remains as the top time in the NCAA and is the third-best mark in Bulldog history.
Florian Le Pallec currently holds the second best time in the country for the men's 10,000 meters with a time of 28:25.89 while
Martin Kovacech's time of 8:46.06 ranks fifth in the nation for the men's 3,000-steeplechase.
Both
William Cuthbertson and
Liam Dennis led the way in their sections of the men's 1,500 meters. Cuthbertson won Section 8 of the event and posted a time of 3:47.35 to move his mark to third all-time in program history while Dennis set a new personal best in Section 2 with a time of 3:51.73.
Cuthbertson would also add in a nineth place finish in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:49.62.
Will Minnette moved his name up to eighth all-time for the men's 10,000 meters after recording a mark of 29:09.72.Â
Other top performances included:
- Luke Finnegan won his heat in the men's 400 meters to place 15th in the event. His mark of 48.54 was a new personal best on the outdoor track. Finnegan added on in the men's 200 meters placing 26th at 21.82.
- Gavin Cougle competed in multiple events as well posting 49.12 in the 400 meters and 22.35 in the 200 meters.
- Wiktoria Klebowska earned 21st in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:37.36.
- Abby Olson set a new lifetime best in the women's 10,000 meters with a time of 34.51.55. She placed third in Section 1 of the event and 30th overall.
Butler will be back in action next weekend at the Jim Vargo Invitational in Louisville, Kent. beginning on Friday Apr. 6.
