Butler Drops Season-Finale in Overtime Thriller to Xavier on Senior Day

The Butler women's lacrosse team played their final game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Xavier coming up just short in an overtime thriller 12-11.

The Bulldogs put on the best offensive performance of the season scoring a season-high 11 goals. Elise Latham led the way for Butler scoring a hat trick and becoming the first Bulldog in program history to ever score at least one goal in every game played during a full season.

The match began in favor of the Bulldogs after taking a 3-1 lead with goals from Katie Smyka, Sophia Knoblock, and Riley Ryan. Xavier would come crawling back to tie the score at 4-4, but back-to-back goals by Annika Bennett gave Butler a 6-4 lead. Before the end of the half, Paris Alexander would net her first goal of the game bringing the score to 7-5.

Alexander would add another goal to begin the second half giving Butler a 8-5 lead. The Musketeers would come storming back in the fourth quarter netting three goals in the final five minutes including one with 23 second left in the game to take a 11-10. With time running out, Butler's top goal scorer Elise Latham stepped up hitting a buzzer-beater shot to force overtime.

In extra time, the Musketeers won the draw and went on the offensive and eventually Xavier's Megan Droney scored the game-winner less than a minute into overtime.
