INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Butler women's lacrosse team hosted their home opener against Akron Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Zips narrowly edged Butler 12-10 behind a five-goal fourth quarter from the Dawgs.
The Zips and Bulldogs went back and forth in the first quarter to be tied 3-3.
Elise Latham,
Maggie Lewis, and
Emma Palmer recorded back-to-back goals to bring the score even.
Akron scored two goals in the second while Butler would score one. The Bulldogs one goal would go to
Katie Smyka. The Eagles would keep their lead to make it 5-4 at the half.
The Zips came out firing in the third with four goals, while Butler would only score one by
Genna Sulek. Akron would hold the lead 9-5 heading into the fourth.
The Dawgs would have a five goal quarter to bring them within two. Lewis and
Riley Ryan would score two goals each and Sulek would record her second goal of the day. Butler ran out of time during their run which allowed Akron to hold onto their lead until the buzzer.
Notable Stats:
- Kerrin McGovern would record eight draw controls, the most in a single game by a player this season
- Lewis recorded three goals, scoring her career high in a single game
- Sulek and Ryan each notched two goals
