Strong Offensive Performance Leads Bulldogs to Win Over Duquesne

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Butler women's lacrosse team picked up a 16-11 win over Duquesne Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field in Indianapolis. 
 
Butler came out firing with three goals in the first six minutes. Elise Latham, Katie Smyka, and Genna Sulek recorded goals. Duquesne would counter with two goals of their own, but the Dawgs would fire back with goals from Riley Ryan and Grace Churchwell to finish the first quarter 5-2. 
 
Duquesne out-scored Butler, 4-3, in the second quarter. Churchwell recorded two goals for Butler and Maggie Lewis recorded the final Bulldog goal of the second quarter. The score going into half was 8-6 in Butler's favor. 
 
After the half, Duquesne came out with two quick goals in the first eight minutes. Churchwell recorded her fourth goal of the game as the Bulldogs' long score of the third quarter. The Dawgs held a slim 9-8 lead heading into the fourth. 
 
The Dawgs came out firing in the fourth quarter. Ryan, Latham, and Emma Palmer would tally three goals in the first four minutes. Duquesne would score one at the nine minute mark and be held scoreless until the final 30 seconds of the game. Smyka, Latham, and two Sulek goals helped create an unbeatable gap for the Dawgs. Butler would go on to secure their second win of the season 16-11. 
 
Notable Stats:
  • Churchwell scored a career high four goals. 
  • Sulek tallied a career high four goals.
  • Latham would score three goals to push her total to 14 for the young season.
