Shockers Take Series With Two Wins on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. - Butler fell to Wichita State in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, 30-1 and 6-4. With the pair of losses, Butler slides to 4-16 on the season while Wichita State improves to 15-6.

  • The first frame was scoreless for both sides. The Shockers got on the board in the second with a three-run home run from Ethan Gonzalez. The home side took the 3-0 advantage into the third.
  • Wichita State plated two more runs on three hits in the third as the Shocker lead grew to five. Butler responded in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Schebler. That was the lone run the Dawgs would score in the frame.
  • Wichita State tacked on eight in the fourth as the Dawgs were unable to stop the Shocker offense. The Shockers tacked on four more in the fifth and 13 in the sixth, giving the home side the 30-1 lead.
  • The game ended after seven innings as the home side secured the big win.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
  • The first was scoreless for both sides. Butler was able to get on the board first in the second behind a two-out, RBI single from Choi. BU was unable to bring any other runners home in the frame, as the lead stood at one with the visitors up to bat.
  • Butler was able to halt the Shockers' offense despite the home side having two runners on as the Dawgs got out of the second without allowing a run. The third was scoreless for both sides.
  • Buckley was dealing on the mound for Butler through four as the senior retired the Shocker side in order in both the third and the fourth. Through four innings, Buckley racked up six punchouts while holding Wichita State to three hits.
  • Butler was able to load the bases with two outs in the fifth but was unable to bring any of the runners home as the BU lead remained at one. Buckley continued to dominate in the bottom half of the inning, retiring the Shocker side in order for the third-consecutive frame.
  • The Dawgs executed a double steal to perfection in the top of the sixth with runners on the corners and no outs. As White stole second, Schebler on the delay, swiped home, extending the Butler lead to two (2-0). Wichita State responded in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs on four hits as the score evened at two.
  • Butler retook the lead in the seventh as Ayers scored on a wild pitch, giving BU the 3-2 advantage. Wichita State exploded for four runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame as the home side took the 6-3 advantage into the eighth.
  • Schebler hit a leadoff homer to start the eighth for BU, cutting the deficit to two. Butler held Wichita State off the board in the bottom half of the inning.
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth, Gavin singled and stole second, putting a runner on with the tying run coming to the plate. BU was unable to bring Gavin home as the Dawgs dropped the final game of the series, 6-4.
 
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday, March 17 as the Dawgs host Purdue at Bulldog Park. BU will then make the quick trip to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State on Wednesday, March 18. More information will be available on butlersports.com.
