Each sport must declare an official practice and playing season
at the beginning of the academic year. The NCAA has regulations
that state the parameters in determining the practice and playing
season for Division I basketball, football, track and field and all
other sports. An In-Season and Out-of-Season declaration will be
determined by the head coach.
During the playing season (In-Season), a student-athlete's
participation is limited to a maximum of four hours per day
(exception for a golf practice round), for a total of 20 hours per
week. One day off must be provided within every seven-day period. A
day of competition is equivalent to a three-hour block of time, no
matter how long or how short the actual duration of competition. A
student-athlete representative for a team (i.e. a captain) will be
asked to sign a practice log weekly (In-Season Log) for all
required countable, permissible, athletically related activities
that take place for the team while "In-Season."
Outside of the playing season (Out-of-Season), a
student-athlete's participation is limited to a total of eight
hours of strength, conditioning and agility workouts. Within the
eight-hour limit, student- athletes (not including football) may
request (voluntarily) up to two hours of individual skill training
in their sport. Each student-athlete will be asked to sign a weekly
practice log (Out-of-Season Log) for all required countable,
permissible, athletically related activities that take place during
each seven-day period. By signing the practice log, the
student-athlete verifies that the activities required are
permissible.
For more details on what is considered to be countable,
athletically related activity, student-athletes should contact the
assistant athletic director for compliance.
