University orders for internal consumption do not bear royalties. This includes items such as promotional giveaways, staff apparel, printed material or stationary, and decorative items. Items are considered for internal consumption if they do not fall into any of the categories below:
A product with a trademark is generally subject to royalty or rights fees if:
1. the product is not paid for by university funds (ie. vendor is paid by employee who is then reimbursed)
2. the product promotes a specific event for which a fee is charged (ie. a t-shirt provided to an attendee of a conference with a registration fee)
3. the name, mark, or logo of a non-University third party is used with the Trademark
4. the product is being resold by members of the University community, including without limitation, registered student organizations and other affiliated organizations.
Beginning July 1, 2018, all internal vendors must maintain both an internal royalty-exempt and an internal royalty-bearing license. Vendors should provide price quotes with royalties and without. The determination of whether or not an order is royalty-bearing will come at the point of artwork review through the BrandManager360 system.
Creating a Butler branded item for your department or student organization
To comply with Butler brand standards and trademark policy, student organizations and departments must use an approved Butler vendor, unless a written exception has been granted from Butler's licensing program.
To view the list of internal vendors, please visit the Licensed Vendors page. Please note that you may order from any vendor on the standard license list, however, only items ordered from vendors on the internal list are able to produce items without royalties.
Please note that our live mascots have their own licensing program. To use Butler Blue III or Blue IV on your items, you will be further restricted in your choice of vendor. To obtain a list of live mascot licensees, please contact us via email at athleticsintern@butler.edu.
Vintage/Vault logos are not permitted for use by on-campus groups,
Real Business Experience
Real Business Experience groups, in conjunction with the Lacy School of Business, are REQUIRED to follow the University's licensing regulations. RBE products are not considered university orders for internal consumption. They will be subject to royalty payments.
All RBE students should review the licensing packet provided by their professors at the beginning of the term and meet with their professors to discuss licensing policy. If they wish to use a registered Butler mark, they should schedule a meeting with Butler Athletic Marketing PRIOR to moving forward with their product.
RBE students are not permitted to use vintage or vault Butler marks and may only use live mascot marks with permission from Evan Krauss, handler for Butler Blue IV.

Bulldog-Related Logos for Campus Use
Due to the University rebranding process, the Bulldog head, which had once been the sole property of Athletics, has been adopted by the university at-large. University marketing has created department-specific marks containing the new Bulldog head. These should be used whenever possible.
The old Bulldog marks featuring a circle around the dog face and the arched Butler text have been discontinued. You will not be permitted to use this mark after March 1, 2015.
Please refer to the Marketing & Communications website for more information. You may also contact Athletic Marketing for suggestions.
