Darren Gauson is in his fourth season at Butler University asthe assistant Coach of Cross Country and Track and Field. Alongwith assisting with the distance athletes and severaladministrative areas, Gauson coaches the sprint and hurdle groups.Gauson also coordinates recruiting for the program having addedseveral national level recruits to the program over the last threeyears.
In Gauson’s first season (08-09) he helped the Bulldogsplace 29th at the NCAA National Cross CountryChampionships in Terre Haute. Andrew Baker earned All-Americanstatus with his 40th place finish at theChampionships.
Gauson helped Butler to their highest team finish at the 2009NCAA Outdoor Championships with a 40th place finish.Steve Lisgo went on to place 3rd at the Championships and then take4th at the European U23 Championships that summer.
Gauson has been important in the development of Butler’sfirst sub-four minute milers with Rob Mullet breaking the barrierin 2010 and achieving All-American status that season. Brother Krisbroke the four minute barrier in the 2011 indoor season; he thenwent on to rank third in the nation in the 1500m with his schoolrecord run of 3:40.59. Gauson was pivotal in the recruitment anddevelopment of Butler’s third female track All-AmericanKirsty Legg as she progressed to the NCAA finals this season.
Gauson has helped energize the sprint and hurdle program withhis athletes breaking four school records in the last three years.Notable improvements and performances by Brent Sever, Alex Berryand Thomas Brueggemann have helped the young sprint group achievenew heights in 2011. Gauson’s recruiting has also bolsteredthe women’s sprint area with 7 new athletes set to join theBulldogs in the fall of 2011.
A native of Edinburgh, Scotland Gauson is a former two-timeScottish National Champion at 1500 meters, winning back to backtitles in 2004 and 2005 and posting a lifetime best of 3:42.16 inthe 1500m. He is a 2006 graduate of Napier University inEdinburgh, earning a degree in Sport and Exercise Science withhonors. Gauson competed for Butler from 2006-2008. In CrossCountry Gauson helped Butler to the NCAA Championships in2006. On the track he won the Horizon League title at 1500meters (2008) while qualifying for the NCAA Mid East Regional at1500 meters in both 2007 and 2008. He earned his MSC inEducation from Butler in2008.

2008 OUTDOOR: Horizon League champ in the 1,500(3:55.51)...placed 18th in the 1,500 (3:54.85) at the NCAA MideastRegional...finished fifth in Section 3 of the 1,500 (3:54.17) atthe Oregon Relays...placed fourth in the 5,000 (15:08.15) at theMiami Team Challenge...came in fifth in the 1,500 (3:57.59) at theIndiana Invitational. 2008 INDOOR: Did notcompete. 2007 OUTDOOR: Placed 3rd in the 800(1:54.39) and fifth in the 1500 (3:55.87) at the Horizon LeagueChampionship...came in 12th in the 1500 (3:52.69) at the NCAAMideast Regional...was third in his section of the 1500 (3:46.77)at the Stanford Invitational...placed 7th in the 5000 (15:27.55) atthe Butler Twilight Meet. 2007 INDOOR: Finishedrunner-up in the mile (4:18.89) and third in the 3000 (8:37.90) atthe Horizon League Championship...placed third in the 3000(8:28.12) at the Hoosier Hills Meet. 2007 CROSSCOUNTRY: Did not compete in any varsity meets. 2006 CROSS COUNTRY: Participated in sixmeets...had a season-best time of 24:28.96 at the Bill DellingerInvitational...placed 4th at the Horizon League Championship with atime of 25:36.95…finished second for the Bulldogs and 103rdoverall at the NCAA Division 1 Championships with a time of 32:57,helping the team to a 25th place overall finish.
