Jon Wegener

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Jon Wegener was hired as an assistant coach for the Butler men's tennis team in October 2019.

The Muncie, Ind., native joined the Bulldogs staff after spending two seasons as the head coach of the women's team at Taylor University in Upland, Ind. The Trojans went 18-14 overall and 11-7 in the Crossroads League under Wegener's direction.

Prior to accepting the head coaching position at Taylor, Wegener served one season as the assistant coach for the James Madison University women’s tennis program, helping guide the Dukes to a 21-4 clip. That record set the program mark for most wins in a single season and equaled the second-highest win percentage in program history.

Wegener also helped JMU advance to the championship match of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the second time in program history, while coaching the CAA Rookie of the Year, three All-CAA singles players and two All-CAA doubles standouts.

Before his stint at JMU, Wegener spent three years as an assistant with the Ball State men’s and women’s tennis programs from 2014 through 2017.

Wegener’s season at Taylor brought his coaching career full circle, as his first job was as a volunteer assistant for the Trojans from 2012-2013.

Wegener began his playing career with three seasons at Ball State, winning the 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship before transferring to Taylor for his senior campaign. He concluded his collegiate playing career with All-Crossroads League honors in 2011-2012.

In addition to his time with Taylor, Ball State and James Madison, Wegener has a decade of experience serving as a tennis instructor at the Muncie Northwest YMCA.

Wegener graduated cum laude from Taylor in 2013 with a degree in exercise science, before earning a master’s degree in English from Ball State in May of 2018.
