John Marcum joined the Butler women's basketball coaching staff in May of 2017. Marcum joins the Bulldogs after coaching stops at Grand Canyon, East Carolina, Indiana State, Cal Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist.
Since joining the staff as the top assistant, Marcum has helped Butler reach 57 wins. BU won a BIG EAST Tournament game in his first year and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the WNIT for the first time in program history during year two.
Marcum helped Grand Canyon post a 15-12 overall record. Before assisting the Lopes, he spent three seasons as the Associate Head Coach at East Carolina. The Pirates went 57-39 during that span with the team winning 22 games in each of his first two seasons. Marcum helped East Carolina sign a top 50-recruiting class in 2015, just one year after bringing in the second-best class in the American Conference for the 2014 campaign.
Marcum did more than just recruit during his time at East Carolina. His responsibilities included scouting, game preparation, and scheduling. Multiple players also earned all-conference honors during his time on the ECU sideline.
Additional coaching experience for Marcum includes stops at Indiana State, Cal Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist, his alma mater. He coached for the Sycamores in 2012-13, helping Indiana State reach 18 total wins. That season ended with a trip to the WNIT.
Marcum's first collegiate head coaching job came at Cal Baptist in 2010. He guided the team to a 47-12 record over two seasons. The Lancers claimed their first-ever conference championship during Marcum's tenure and returned to the national tournament for the first time at Cal Baptist since 1982.
Marcum's coaching career started at Oklahoma Baptist University in 2002. He served as an assistant to the men's basketball staff for four years and then transitioned to the women's basketball program from 2007-10.
A collegiate baseball player, Marcum graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's in secondary education with a concentration in history. He earned his master's in secondary education with a concentration in physical education in 2003 from East Central University.
John is the proud father of Abby, Matty and Cooper Marcum.
