Julie Shelton returned to her alma mater in 2014 to become an assistant coach for the women's basketball program. Butler alums may be more familiar with Coach Shelton's maiden name, VonDielingen, as in the Julie VonDielingen that holds multiple scoring records in the women's basketball record book.
A 2006 Butler Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Shelton is regarded as one of the top women's basketball players to ever wear a Butler uniform. She finished her career as Butler's all-time leading scorer and as the second all-time leading scorer in the Horizon League.
She's the only player in Butler women's basketball history to score over 2,000 career points, finishing with an all-time record 2,018 points. She was a four-time, first team all-league performer, and she was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in 1992-93.
The talented center was named District 4 Freshman of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers in 1989-90 and was picked to the All-America team by Basketball Times in 1992-93. She currently owns 11 Butler single game, single season and career basketball records.
Shelton's coaching career is equally as impressive as the former Butler standout spent 16 years at the post of the Mt. Vernon women's basketball high school team leading the Marauders to a 260-107 record during her tenure.
Recent success includes winning a 3A State Championship in 2013, reaching semi-state in 2012 and five sectional titles ranging from 2003, 2005, 2011, 2012, and 2013.
Numerous coaching awards have been handed to Shelton throughout her outstanding career some of which include being named NFHS State Coach of the Year in 2011-12, ICGSA State Coach of the Year in 2011-12, ICGSA District 4 Coach of the Year in 2010-11, and being a two-time IBCA District Coach of the Year in 2000 and again in 2012.
An exceptional player at Seymour H.S., Shelton was inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame as a member of the Silver Anniversary Team in 2014. She left Seymour to continue her career at Butler and has only had one coaching job since as the head coach at Mt. Vernon.
Shelton earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Butler in elementary education in May of 1993. She went back to school to earn her Master's degree in special education at IUPUI in May of 2003.
