Bill Mattingly announced his retirement in May of 2021. He served as Butler's men's golf coach from 2007-2021, and also led the women's program from 2007-2019 before handing over leadership of the women's program to Christie Cates.
In his time at Butler, Mattingly helped the Butler golf programs win 44 tournaments. The women's golf program has won 25 events and has made three trips to the NCAA Regional.
Mattingly's last few official days leading the Butler men's golf program were spent alongside Michael Cascino at the NCAA Regional in Noblesville, Ind. Cascino won the 2021 BIG EAST title in a playoff, becoming the first Butler men's golfer to win BIG EAST medalist honors while also earning an automatic berth in the regional field.
Mattingly also helped Lauren Tibbets to the 2017 BIG EAST women's title. In 2017, Butler's women posted a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. On the men's side, the Bulldogs finished third in 2019, the program's best result since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
Both Joey Arcuri (2017) and Patrick Allgeier (2019) tied for second individually at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship.
In 2013, Mattingly guided Butler's women's squad to a championship in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), the Bulldogs' only year in the conference. That followed back-to-back Horizon League championships in 2011 and 2012. Former Bulldog Michele Nash was twice named league player of the year and Jenna Peters earned BIG EAST Player of the Year honors after the completion of her senior season in 2014-15.
Butler's women's golf program is among just 62 teams that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year of the 15-year-old program. Team earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.
Mattingly has had dozens of his student-athletes receive academic accolades, including WGCA All-American Scholar and First wave Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars honors, as well as BIG EAST All-Academic Team and Butler Athletic Director's Honor Roll recognition.
Mattingly, a life member of the Indiana Professional Golfers Association, coached at local high school powerhouse Cathedral for 18 years. He guided Cathedral teams to 32 invitational titles and six state championship appearances. He was named Ball State Alumni Coach of the Year for both boys and girls golf in 2006.
Mattingly, a varsity golf letterwinner at Ball State (1971-72), has been actively involved in golf in the Indianapolis area for more than four decades. He served as head professional at Thatcher Golf Course in Indianapolis from 1981 to 1984 and at South Grove Golf Course from 1985 to 1992. He was owner of Supreme Golf and Driving Range in Carmel from 1993 to 2003.
An accomplished player, the Butler head coach won the Indiana Assistant's Championship in 1979, and he was Indiana PGA Champion in 1983. He's an eight-time qualifier for the National Club Professional Championship.
Mattingly earned a B.S. degree in marketing from Ball State in 1976. He and his wife, Maureen Sullivan, have four sons, William, Daniel, Charles, and Peter.
