Ryan Von Gunten was hired as an assistant coach for the Butler swimming program in September 2019. The 2021 campaign is Von Gunten's third with the program.
Prior to coming to Butler, Von Gunten worked as an assistant coach for the University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team from 2014 to 2015. During his time at Notre Dame, Von Gunten coached three All-Americans, and two All-ACC team members. In addition to his coaching, Von Gunten signed 11 athletes to swim in the fall of 2016, in what collegeswimming.com named the ninth-ranked class in the nation.
Before his time as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, Von Gunten served as the Director of Operations for the team from 2013 to 2014. Von Gunten planned and organized travel for the team and coaching staff, and assisted in marketing and promotions for the program.
Earlier in his professional career, Von Gunten was a part of the Indiana swim team as a volunteer assistant coach from 2012 to 2013. As an assistant, he helped lead both the men’s and women’s teams to a second place finish in the Big Ten. For the men’s and women’s team combined, Von Gunten coached 17 All-Americans, seven First Team All-Big Ten members and seven All-Big Ten second team members.
Von Gunten received his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in 2004. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Indiana University in 2006.
