Dr. Joel M. Kary is the Primary Care Team Physician for Butler University Athletics.

Originally from Illinois, Dr. Kary completed his undergraduate studies at Anderson University in Anderson, IN with a degree in Athletic Training. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2003. His family medicine residency training was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Bend, IN. He served as an assistant team physician for football and basketball and head team physician for men’s soccer while at Notre Dame.

Dr. Kary has been a Team Physician for Butler University since 2007. He is also a Team Physician for USA Track and Field and Ed Carpenter Racing. His work as a sports medicine physician has included serving at the USA Track and Field Championships, USA National Gymnastics Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships, Big Ten Basketball Championships, and numerous other national/international sporting events. He has served as the Medical Director for the Carmel Marathon and the Geist Half Marathon.

Dr. Kary has a special interest in non-operative musculoskeletal medicine and management of medical conditions related to sports such as concussion, asthma, and mononucleosis. As a former college runner, he particularly enjoys the evaluation and management of running and endurance athlete injuries. In addition, he utilizes Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in his practice to aid in diagnosis and guide injections. He is a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Dr. Kary is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.
