Joey Gruner joined the Butler Athletics Communications staff in August 2021. He most recently was the Sports Information Director at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, working within the athletic department there since November of 2018. Gruner received a 2021 National Champion Sports Information Director award from the College Sports Information Directors of America for his coverage of the Parkland golf team’s National Championship season.

Gruner received his master’s degree in Sports Management from the University of Illinois in 2016. He also has bachelor’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and History Education. The native of southern Illinois is an award-winning high school soccer coach who also has coordinated soccer programs in Honduras. He was a Spanish teacher for many years at the high school level.

Gruner and his wife, Angie, reside in Indianapolis. They have two grown children. Their son, Jeremy, is a Butler alum who studied in the School of Music as well as with Butler Ballet. Their daughter, Alysha, and son-in-law, Harold Gil, live in Lawrence with their three children.
