Patrick Casey was hired at Butler in the fall of 2013 as thehitting coach. Before arriving on campus Casey spent five years onthe University of St. Thomas coaching staff, from 2008-2012. InCasey's five years at St. Thomas the Tommies posted a 179-59 record(.752 winning percentage) including an 83-15 record in conferenceplay. Casey was a part of five MIAC Conference Championships, fiveNCAA Regional appearances and have twice qualified for the NCAADivision III College World Series, finishing third in 2012 andwinning the National Championship in 2009.
As a prep, Casey graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels inRichfield, Minnesota and collected seven letters during his prepcareer in baseball, basketball and football. Casey was namedAll-Missota Conference, All District (twice) and the set the schoolrecord for most runners thrown out in a season (17) from behind theplate. The Stars posted a 35-10 record during his prep era inbaseball which included a trip to the state tournament in 2001.Casey was also the starting wide receiver for the Stars in footballand was a part of the first team in school history to make anappearance in the State Tournament in 2002. In college, Casey was athree-year letter winning catcher at the University of North Dakota(2005-2007). He played three different positions for the FightingSioux and posted a .995 career fielding percentage having playedcatcher, second base and outfield.
As an assistant with St. Thomas Casey’s primaryresponsibilities included development of the catchers and workingwith the offense. In January of 2010 Casey became the programsfirst Recruiting Coordinator and by 2011 he began assisting insports information for Tommiesports.com and became responsible forthe placement of players in summer programs across the state andwithin the Northwoods League. In Casey's first season working withthe catchers UST backstops went from throwing out 16% (9 for 56 inattempted base stealers against) to 45% (14 for 31) in 2010, nearlya 30% improvement. UST catchers also cut down by more than half inpassed balls (12 in 2009 to only 5 in 2010), errors (5 errors in2009 to 3 errors in 2010) and catcher’s interference calls (4in 2009 to zero in 2010). UST catchers fielding percentage alsoincreased by 15% in 2010 from ’09.
As a recruiter Casey helped replenish the St. Thomas program inthree years with more than three dozen All-State and All-Conferenceperformers including JD Dorgan, Dylan Thomas, Steven Maher, JackHogan and Tim Kuzniar. JD Dorgan, Casey’s catcher from2011-2012, was named Freshman of the Year and All Region by ABCA in2011 after one of the most impressive seasons in school history. Asa sophomore Dorgan went on to collect MIAC and ABCA All-RegionalGold Glove honors and set a new school record with 19 runnersthrown out attempting to steal and 9 runners picked off on the basepaths.
In addition to his work with St. Thomas, Casey also managed andwas the starting catcher for the East Side Merchants of the Class-AAmateur League in St. Paul from 2005-2011. In the summer of 2011 hewas selected as a coach for the Class-A All Star Team where six ofhis players from both St. Thomas and the Merchants joined him. Inaddition to his work at St. Thomas he is also the head catchinginstructor at Complete Game Baseball and Softball Training in LinoLakes, Minnesota. In February 2012, Casey signed a contract tocoach with the Waterloo Bucks of the Northwoods League. Whilecoaching with Waterloo Casey’s responsibilities includedworking with the catchers, offense, coaching 3rd Base and assistingin recruiting. His starting catcher Austin Barrett (Mercer College)was nominated to the Northwoods League All-Star Game and was amongthe league leaders in average, hits, on-base percentage and totalbases. Waterloo’s offense was also one of the most potent inthe entirety of the Northwoods League posting top five finishes inoverall average, hits, runs per/game, stolen bases and total bases.Casey was nominated for Northwoods League Coach of the YearHonors.
Since beginning his coaching career in 2008 Casey has coach anddevelop more than twenty All-Americans and over a dozen MLBDraftees. Casey has worked at multiple baseball camps and clinicsthroughout the state over the last six years which include the USTPitching and Catching Camp and his own Anoka Baseball CatchersClinic which began in 2011. He has been a speaker at multiplecoaches’ clinics and has helped assist at the Minnesota Twinstry-out camps in Minneapolis.
His grandfather, the late Bob Casey, was the Hall of Fame publicaddress voice of the Minnesota Twins from 1961-2005. His father,Mike, lettered for the Tommies in Baseball from 1972-1975 and was apart of the 1972 MIAC Conference Championship team while alsoserving as a professional scout for the Minnesota Twins from1980-1987. Casey graduated from the University of St. Thomas with abachelor’s degree in English and Literature Arts with anEmphasis in Writing.
