Bulldogs Fall at Valparaiso in Season Opener

Box Score

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Butler women's basketball team took a 91-57 loss to Valparaiso in the 2014-15 season opener. Blaire Langlois scored 17 of her team-high 20 points in the second half for the Bulldogs.

Langlois played for all 40 minutes against the Crusaders as the short-handed Bulldogs got off to a 0-1 start to the season. With only seven active players on the roster, Butler was forced to play the final 4:19 with just four players on the court. Emmy Schabel and Andriana Moore each fouled out in their team debut and Ijeoma Uchendu was limited to just the first half.

Uchendu was great in the first 20 minutes, scoring 14 points, grabbing seven rebounds and adding two blocks. After taking a shot to the head in the final seconds of the first half she was unable to continue.

With Uchendu out of the equation, Sydney Buck stepped up for the Bulldogs to score 11 second half points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Sophomore Serena Sandusky scored five points for BU and Moore rounded out the point total with seven.

Five different players reached a double figure scoring total for the Crusaders as Abby Dean ended the night with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Dean was 3-for-4 from distance while also adding six boards and three assists.

The Crusaders shot 52 percent from the field and 48 percent from deep, ending the game with 12 3-point field goals.

First half action started off tight as the two teams were separated by just two points (21-19) with 6:44 remaining in the half. Valpo enjoyed a 33-22 lead at the break after ending the half on a 12-3 scoring run.

The Crusader lead would hover around 10 points up to the first media timeout in the second half, but the advantage jumped to 15 points near the 12 minute mark. Butler continued to give up points in the paint due to foul trouble which helped Valpo cushion their lead. Langlois scored the final bucket for the Bulldogs with a triple to net her 20 points and the final buzzer would sound a minute later giving the Crusaders the victory.

The Bulldogs will return to action with a 1 p.m. tip vs. Indiana State on Sunday, Nov. 16. The 2014-15 home opener will be broadcasted live on the BIG EAST Digital Network by Mark Minner and Tully Bevilaqua.
