Bulldogs Drop Home Opener to Indiana State

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler came up short Sunday afternoon, losing to Indiana State 66-51 in the team's home opener at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Junior Andriana Moore posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

Junior Blaire Langlois and freshman Sydney Buck shared the team lead in points scored with 14 each. Buck did a majority of her damage from 3-point range going 4-for-8 from distance. In all, four Butler players scored in double digits with Serena Sandusky also contributing 10 points.

Butler was limited to just six active players on the roster for the game. Langlois and Buck played all 40 minutes for the Bulldogs with Sandusky and freshman Emmy Schabel appearing in 39 minutes.

The Sycamores were paced by Alexis Newbolt's team-high 15 points. Indiana State shot nearly 40 percent from the field for the game and went 8-for-23 from 3-point territory.

The game began slowly for both teams with Indiana State holding a 12-7 lead midway through the first half. The Sycamores then went on a 10-0 run with nine minutes to go before halftime to go ahead 22-7 in the closing minutes of the opening frame. The Bulldogs went on a dry spell from the field in the first half, going more than 12 minutes without a field goal.

A 3-pointer from Buck ended the drought for the Bulldogs, one of two successful shots from the beyond the arc for Buck in the first half, as Butler went to the locker room behind 27-13. Butler shot just 16 percent (4-for-25) from the field in the first half which also led to the 14 point deficit.

The Bulldogs shot much more effectively in the second half, shooting 37 percent (10-for-27) after halftime. The second stanza was highly competitive with ISU outscoring BU 39-38.

After being behind by as many as 27 points, Butler was able to cut the lead to 13 points with under two minutes remaining in the game, due in part to Moore's 12 points and seven rebounds in the second half. The Bulldogs ran out of gas with just six active players and were clearly unable to foul down the stretch to stop the clock due to lack of depth.

Butler will return to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a home contest against Chattanooga Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
