Butler had rallied from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning. Kristen Boros led off the seventh with a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Maria Leichty. A ground out by Krista Hakola moved Boros to third, and then she scored on an infield single by Alie Tarrant to tie the game at 6-6.
The Bulldogs threatened to take the lead moments later when Krosley Ogden doubled to center field, but UMKC wiggled off the hook when Callie Dennison grounded out.
The Bulldogs started strongly with a pair of runs in the first inning. Dennison and Brandyce Sallee singled and Alex Kotter followed with a run-scoring double. Chelsea Norwood plated the second run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
But UMKC answered with two runs in the bottom of the second and four in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs came up with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Sallee.
Butler tagged two UMKC pitchers for a season-high 13 hits in the game. Sallee and Kotter led that offensive attack with three hits and two RBIs apiece, while Ogden added a pair of hits.
