Box Score NASHVILLE, TENN. --For the second straight day, Butler went to extra innings to pull out a victory at the 2014 Music City Classic. The Bulldogs, who dropped a game to Detroit earlier in the evening, rallied for a single run in the top of the eighth frame to defeat East Tennessee State, 3-2, on a chilly Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn.
Butler (2-1), after watching a 2-0 lead evaporate in the bottom of the seventh inning, began the eighth frame with junior Kristin Boros on second base, under the international tie-breaker rule. She reached second on a single by sophomore Alex Kotter and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Maria Leichty.
Boros then scored the eventual game-winner on a ground out by freshman Alie Tarrant. Senior Leah Bry, who made her second pitching performance of the season in relief of starter Kristin Gutierrez, retired the Buccaneers in order in the bottom of the eighth, striking out the final two batters, to earn her first win of the season.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on singles by Krosley Ogden and Sarah Gronowski, a fielder's choice by Chelsea Norwood that scored Ogden, and a run-scoring single by Brandyce Sallee.
The Buccaneers (0-1) nicked Gutierrez for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
Gronowski, Sallee and Kotter each had a pair of hits to pace Butler's eight-hit attack.
Prior to the ETSU win, Butler dropped a 7-2 decision to Detroit. The Titans jumped out with five runs in the first two innings and then added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
The Bulldogs broke up the shutout on Sallee's first collegiate home run in the fourth inning and then added a second run on Norwood's first collegiate home run one inning later.
Tarrant, getting her first collegiate start on the mound, took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Butler will wrap up play in the tournament on Sunday (Feb. 9) with a single game at Lipscomb at 1:30 p.m.
