INDIANAPOLIS – Butler posted a 5-3 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon. A total team effort pushed BU over the top as seven different players recorded a hit against the Crusaders. Marcos Calderon led the charge with a 2-for-4 day from the plate which included one RBI and one run scored.

The Bulldogs only had to use two arms on Sunday as Eric Stout earned the win and senior Billy Laing came in for the three inning save. Stout struck out a team-high three batters in his six innings of work. Laing finished off Valpo to earn his fourth save of the season.

Michael Fries gave Butler an early lead on Sunday with an RBI that sent Calderon to the plate. That one-run lead would last until the top of the fifth inning when Valpo sent a single run across home plate that tied the contest.

Butler responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Mike Kseniak and Marco Caponi.

Valparaiso got back within one run with a score in the top of the sixth inning, but solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings cushioned the BU advantage. Calderon sent a double to right center field in the seventh while Nick Bartolone singled through the left side in the eighth to record an RBI.

The Crusaders were able to score one run off Laing with a fielder's choice from Michael Morman that scored Jeff Edwards. The comeback would fall short as Laing got Andy Burns to ground out to first base, ending the game.

Butler is now 11-15 overall as they prepare for BIG EAST competition with a single game at IPFW on Tuesday, April 1. The BIG EAST schedule will begin with a three-game series vs. Seton Hall April 4-6.
