Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team took a 2-1 setback vs. Indiana State on Wednesday afternoon. The two clubs battled it out at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis, the home of the Indianapolis Indians.
Each team used a committee on the mound with AJ McElderry earning the win for Indiana State while Jeff Schank was tagged with the loss. Scoring got underway with a single run in the top of the fifth inning off a Jacob Hayes RBI.
A bunt single from Landon Curry led off the inning and Curry was able to move himself into scoring position by stealing second base. ISU called for the sacrifice bunt with Cody Zimmerman at the plate which was executed by moving Curry to third and the first run of the game would come home on the Hayes at-bat as Curry broke for home on contact.
Indiana State was able to double their lead in the sixth with a single run off an RBI from Derek Hannahs. Aggressive base running once again helped ISU score as Tyler Wampler walked and then moved to second after stealing a base. A hard hit single through the right side of the infield was enough for the speedy Wampler to come around and score the second run of the game.
Butler would make things interesting with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Marcos Calderon tagged up from third and scored on the Chris Maranto sac fly. Calderon ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate with a walk and a run scored. He joined Marco Caponi as the only Bulldogs to record multiple hits.
Butler would end the contest with a one run deficit thanks to Josh Dove who came in to record a two-inning save, his first of the year.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a three-game road series at Creighton this weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday, April 25.
