Creighton Takes Saturday Doubleheader over Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OMAHA – Butler came up short on Saturday afternoon as the Creighton Bluejays swept the weekend series with a pair of wins during today's doubleheader. Creighton scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning in game one to pull out a 2-1 victory and the day would come to a close with a 4-2 setback in the nightcap.

Runs were hard to come by in game one as the two teams remained scoreless heading in the fifth inning. Butler had two base runners in scoring position in the top half of the inning, but was unable to generate a run to grab the lead. The Bluejays responded by putting a pair of base runners on the paths themselves as Ryan Fitzgerald and Mike Gerber singled to get the inning going. Billy Laing struggled with his command at times on Saturday as the senior ended the game by walking nine batters. It was a walk that pushed the first run across home plate as Laing put Joey Mancuso on with the bases loaded.

The walked in run wouldn't end Butler's day as Will Amador led off the seventh inning with a double down the left field line. A sac bunt from Marco Caponi moved Amador to third base and Alex Horowitz would tie the game with an RBI single back up the middle of the field.

For a moment it looked like the two team would head into extra innings, but Creighton stepped up with a clutch single to right center that ended up winning them the game. Reagan Fowler delivered a walk-off single to right field with Fitzgerald on second base. Fitzgerald was on the move with two outs in the inning as he came home to score the game-winning run.

Amador was top offensive player for Butler during game one. The catcher went 2-for-4 as the No. 6 hitter with a run scored. Head Coach Steve Farley used three arms in the game with Laing getting the start. The senior limited CU to just four hits in five innings while striking out three Bluejays.

Kyle Kramp tossed 2.1 innings of action out of the bullpen and Will Schierholz finished the game on the mound for BU. Kramp only allowed one hit during his time on the mound while Schierholz was hit with the loss after giving up the run in the bottom of the ninth.

Game two was another low scoring affair with Butler taking a 4-2 loss. Eric Stout was hit with the loss on the mound after throwing the first seven innings of the game. He struck out four, but was hit up for four runs off 10 hits. Kyle Allen finished the game on the mound for Butler. He was perfect in his lone inning of action, shutting Creighton out across the board.

Scoring in game two opened up after a bunt single in the bottom of the second for Creighton. Kevin Lamb laid down the bunt and Reagan Fowler scored the opening run of the game.

The Bluejays cushioned their lead with two RBI singles through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the fifth. Brett Murray and Lamb each came up with a timely hit to push the lead to 3-0.

Butler would not go out quietly as Michael Fries hit a triple to left center that scored Mike Kseniak. Fries would come around to score soon after a pitching change as Marco Caponi doubled down the left field line.

Fowler gave Creighton an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single back up the middle of the diamond that scored Gerber. It was an unearned run as Gerber reached first base to lead off the inning after a BU error.

Butler will return to the action with a single game vs. Kalamazoo on Tuesday, April 29. First pitch at Bulldog Park will be at 3 p.m.
