Box Score 2 INDIANAPOLIS – Butler held opposing hitters scoreless for a victory in the first game of a doubleheader with Providence (3-18) before falling behind early in a loss in the second contest at the Butler Softball Field on Saturday, April 4. The Bulldogs won the first game 4-0, losing the second contest 7-2. Saturday's split brings Butler to 13-21 on the season and 3-4 in the BIG EAST.
The Bulldogs got out to a quick lead in the first contest, as sophomore Krosley Ogden, junior Sarah Gronowski, and sophomore Alex Kotter loaded the bases in the first three at bats of the game. Junior Maria Leichty drove Ogden home on a ground ball to the shortstop and Gronowski followed by scoring on a wild pitch. The final run of the first inning came via freshman Chelsea Norwood, who drove in Kotter on a single to right field.
Sophomore and BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Kristin Gutierrez posted six strikeouts for the Bulldogs, picking up a shutout after pitching a complete game. The Bulldogs finished with nine hits, paced by junior Kristen Boros, who finished with 2 hits, one run, one RBI, and a home run in the sixth inning.
Pitcher Taylor Huntly picked up a victory for the Friars in the second game of the day. Huntly, who pitched the entire first contest and five innings of the second, had three strikeouts on the day.
The Friars jumped out to an early lead in the second game, leading 6-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning. The Bulldogs attempted to rally in the 6th inning, led by Norwood, who drove home Kotter on a single to left field. Providence responded with a pitching change, and new pitcher Kiara Amos retired the inning with three Bulldog players on base.
Norwood led the Bulldogs in the second game, posting two hits and one RBI. Freshman pitcher Allie Tarrant picked up the loss for Butler, and relief pitcher Callie Dennison posted three strikeouts in the final two innings.
Butler and Providence will play the final contest of their three-game series on Sunday, April 6, at the Butler Softball Field. The game will begin at 11 a.m.
