Box Score 2 MOREHEAD, KY.. -- Butler unleashed its biggest offensive output of the season and won both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Morehead State on Wednesday, April 9. The Bulldogs captured the opener of the twinbill at University Field, 11-6, and then completed the sweep with a 12-8 victory.
The 12 runs Butler scored in the second game were the most in one contest this season, while the 11 runs tallied in the opener matched the previous season-high. The Bulldogs had a season-high 15 hits in each game and recorded a season-high 10 RBIs in the second win.
Seven different Butler players had multiple hits on the day, paced by junior Sarah Gronowski. The Butler outfielder had five hits on the afternoon, including three in the opening win. Junior Kristen Boros, sophomore Alex Kotter and freshman Brandyce Sallee each finished the day with four hits.
The Bulldogs (16-21) never trailed in the first game, jumping to a 6-1 advantage before holding off a late Morehead State comeback attempt. Sallee had three hits, including a double and her third home run of the season, and drove in four runs to lead Butler's first-game attack. Gronowski added three hits in five trips to the plate.
Sophomore Kristen Gutierrez went the distance in the circle for the Bulldogs and picked up her sixth consecutive victory. She had six strikeouts in the win, while improving to 11-8 on the season.
Butler had to overcome a three-run deficit to win the second game. Trailing 8-5 after surrendering seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs unleashed five runs on five hits in the sixth frame to take the lead for good. Boros drove in two runs with a single in the rally, while Kotter and freshman Chelsea Norwood added run-scoring hits. Sallee drove in the fifth run with a sacrifice fly.
Boros had three hits and three RBIs to pace Butler's offense in the win, and she picked up the victory with three innings of relief pitching work. She allowed just one hit and one unearned run in her first pitching appearance of the season.
Kotter added a pair of hits and three RBIs in the second game, while Norwood had two hits and two runs batted in.
The Bulldogs, who have won eight of the last ten games, will return to BIG EAST play with a three-game series at Villanova on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13.
