Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Butler improved to 14-17 on the year with a 6-5 mid-week win over Ball State on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs scored four runs through the first five innings and were able to hold off a late BSU charge to record the victory. The significant win was a milestone for Head Coach Steve Farley as he chalked up career win number 600.
The top of the BU order was impressive once again as the duo of Marcos Calderon and Chris Maranto combined for four hits, four runs scored and one RBI. Michael Fries, Ryan Wojciechowski and Chris Marras also posted an RBI against the Cardinals helping the 'Dawgs post their second straight win.
Scoring started in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single from Calderon. The second run came on a wild play with the bases loaded. Fries hit a shot down the third base line which gave BSU the force out at home. The third baseman made the throw and got the out, but Ball State got greedy as the catcher threw the ball down the first base line trying for the double play. The strategy didn't pay off as the ball sailed over the head of the first baseman and Calderon came around to score the second run of the inning.
Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings cushioned the BU lead as Chris Marras delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Marco Caponi and a double steal send Maranto to the dish in the bottom of the fifth.
The seventh inning became arguably one of the most entertaining for each fan base as both BSU and BU posted two runs to the scoreboard. Two RBI singles through the left side of the infield allowed Butler to match Ball State's first two runs of the game.
The competition would heat up down the stretch as BSU scored two more runs in the eighth followed by one in the ninth. Will Schierholz got Butler out of trouble in the top of the eighth and senior Billy Laing came in to earn his sixth save of the season for BU in the ninth.
The win went to Peter Nyznyk who didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning when Estep hit a two-out single to left field. Nyznyk played very well against Ball State, striking out four batters in six full innings of work. Three hits were recorded against the left-handed junior resulting in two earned runs.
The final Bulldog to see the mound was Danny Pobereyko who came in for one inning of relief work for Nyznyk in the seventh. He ended his outing with one strikeout and two earned runs.
The Bulldogs will now head into the weekend with a three-game series at St. John's. Coverage for the Red Storm series will be easy to follow as the two teams play on ESPN 3 on both Friday and Sunday. Saturday's game will be aired live on Fox Sports 2.
