Box Score Playing without its two leading goal-scorers, Butler fended off a number of Georgetown chances, but ultimately fell to the #12 Hoyas, 2-0, Saturday afternoon. Brandon Allen and Cole Seiler found the net for Georgetown, which improves to 7-2-2 (3-0 BIG EAST). The #19/21 Bulldogs drop to 6-2-3 (2-1).
The Bulldogs' roster felt the absence of
Vincent Mitchell and
David Goldsmith, who both missed the match due to injury. The match-up of ranked teams included two of the three BIG EAST teams that entered play on Saturday with 2-0 conference records.
Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick had a career-high 12 saves, facing 23 Georgetown shots.
Butler's best chance came when it was still scoreless in the 25
th minute as
Bennett Kim got in the box and dropped the ball to
Eric Leonard, who rocketed a shot by the Georgetown keeper, but it caught the right post squarely.
Jeff Adkins got a running start at the rebound, but his shot was saved.
Less than three minutes later, Georgetown would get on the board first as Alex Muyl corralled the ball left of the goal along the endline, crossing the ball to the face of the goal where Allen used his left foot to score. The score remained 1-0 as the teams exchanged chances for the remainder of the first half. Butler forced four saves by the Hoyas' keeper in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, Seiler scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Arun Basuljevic. The goal in the 55th minute extended Georgetown's lead to 2-0 and ultimately was the final score.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday night, hosting the nation's top-ranked team, the Creighton Blue Jays, at the Butler Bowl at 7 p.m. For those fans who cannot be there in person, the match will be broadcast live on ButlerSports.com.
