Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – A single goal separated Butler from the best team in the country on Wednesday night as the Bluejays avoided the upset with a 1-0 victory at the Butler Bowl. The two teams went into halftime tied at 0-0, but a score from Timo Pitter in the 69th would lift Creighton to 13-0-0.
"We fought tonight," Head Coach Paul Snape explained after the match. "We dealt with a very difficult opponent, the best in the country actually… ranked No. 1 and rightfully so, but I thought we had to adjust to them and we did."
Creighton was the more aggressive team in the opening stages of the match which led to a 10-1 shot count over the first 45 minutes of action. Goalkeeper Eric Dick made all four of his stops in the opening frame while his counterpart, Connor Sparrow, picked up the win with only one save.
"They had a few chances in the first half, but I thought we did a really nice job in the second half of limiting those chances," Snape added. "A moment of absolute brilliance from a couple of their top players just got us in the end."
The lone goal of the game was scored by Timo Pitter off an assist from Fabian Herbers. Pitter took the pass and moved up the right side of the field. He sent his shot to the lower left corner of the net to beat the keeper and give the Bluejays the 1-0 victory.
"It's disappointing because we are so close," Snape stated "We just have to find a way to win these games. Overall, I'm real proud of the boys tonight."
Butler had David Goldsmith return to the lineup tonight after missing some time due to injury. Vincent Mitchell was also in action for BU, recording 50 minutes off the bench for the Bulldogs. Mitchell tied Jeff Adkins for the team lead in shots with two each.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a 7 PM match vs. St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 17.
