@ButlerMenSoccer Travels to Marquette in Key BIG EAST Match-Up

Box Score

The Starting Eleven – Notes for the Bulldogs' Match at Marquette, October 31, 2015

One More for the Road: The Bulldogs travel to Milwaukee for a key BIG EAST match-up Saturday night against Marquette. For the Bulldogs, it is the last regular season road match. Butler controls its own destiny in regard to hosting a quarterfinal match of the BIG EAST Tournament, but will need to perform well down the stretch to make that happen. The match will begin at 8 p.m. (Eastern, 7 p.m. Milwaukee) and be broadcast on BEDN.
Setting the Table: The Bulldogs stand at 8-4-3 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST play. Marquette is 5-8-2 (1-5-1 BIG EAST). Butler stands fourth in the BIG EAST standings with two matches to play. Bulldog fans will want to keep a particular eye on the matches involving DePaul and Villanova Saturday. If those two teams lose coupled with a Butler win, the Bulldogs are guaranteed to host a second-round match.
Last Time Out: Jake Scheper's goal in the eighth minute proved to be the only tally as visiting DePaul knocked off Butler, 1-0, Wednesday night in BIG EAST play at the Butler Bowl. After a takedown that resulted in a Butler turnover, Scheper collected the ball and fired a shot from just inside the 18 on the right side. The ball looked to carom off a Butler defender, adjust course, and get by Bulldogs keeper Eric Dick to the short side.

Against Marquette: Marquette leads the all-time series against Butler by a 4-2 margin and is 3-0 against the Bulldogs at home. Butler snapped a three-game losing skid to the Golden Eagles with a 1-0 home win last year.

Balancing the Books (with the Play): Butler forward David Goldsmith has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team. The 2015 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Men's Soccer Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Goldsmith, a junior majoring in Middle/Secondary Education, carries a cumulative 3.84 GPA. On the pitch, the Bristol, England native is Butler's second-leading scorer this season. He has registered six goals and 13 points in only 11 matches.

Giving Back: Mark Spiegel, a former men's soccer player at Butler University in Indianapolis, has been selected as the recipient of 2015 Jerry Yeagley Award for Exceptional Personal Achievement. He will receive his award at the NSCAA All-America Luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, during the 69th annual NSCAA Convention in Baltimore. The Yeagley Award is presented annually to a college men's or women's soccer player (past or present) who has demonstrated exceptional personal achievement amid extraordinary accomplishments that transcend normal expectations, and who is or was an example and inspiration to his or her teammates and institution.

Spiegel created "Make Your Own Ball Day," which later turned into a nonprofit organization that encourages kids to create, give, appreciate, and play. Kids in the program make their own soccer balls out of whatever materials are available to them, while learning that there are others less fortunate, who love to play but do not have the same resources and opportunities as them. His vision blossomed into teaching kids the value of giving by having them donate real soccer balls to the underprivileged.

You Will Get Nothing: Butler logged its fifth shutout of the season, while out-shooting Seton Hall, 18-7, Saturday night. Butler's defense played well to the point that keeper Eric Dick was only called upon to make one save on the night. Seton Hall did have a penalty kick that was sent wide. Dick's 6-foot-5 frame perhaps influenced the Seton Hall designee to take the PK. Dick was named to the BIG EAST's Honor Roll this week after his shutout performance.

Back in the Scoring Column: Senior Vincent Mitchell scored the first goal of the match against Seton Hall to register his team-leading ninth goal of the season. It was his first goal since the Providence match Oct. 3, but he sat out the Georgetown match and part of the Creighton match due to injury. Seven of Mitchell's goals came in a five-match stretch that began with two goals against Indiana Sept. 16. Mitchell now has four game-winning goals on the season, including three in BIG EAST play. Mitchell's work earned him a place on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for two consecutive weeks during that five-match stretch. Mitchell was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth time thanks to his game-winner against Seton Hall.

That's Offensive: The three goals against Seton Hall marked the fourth time this season that Butler netted at least three goals. That did not occur once during the 2014 season. The Bulldogs scored 18 goals in 18 games a season ago. Butler already has 26 goals in 15 matches in 2015.

Start 'Em If You Got 'Em: Marco Charalambous, Eric Leonard, Caleb Postlewait and Joe Moulden have started all 15 matches for Butler this season. In addition, three others have started all matches in which they have appeared. Those are David Goldsmith (11 matches), and 14 each for freshman Jared Timmer and Mike Kozielek. Butler had the same starting line-up for its first six matches of the season before injuries and red cards required coach Paul Snape to make adjustments. Fifteen players have started matches for Butler this season.

Quick Strikes: Redshirt freshman Marco Charalambous scored the first goal of his Butler career against St. John's. That resulted in the Cyprus product being named "BIG EAST Newcomer of the Week" on Oct. 5. Charalambous is tied for third on the team with three assists…Kieran Geldenhuys picked up the first assist of his Butler career at Seton Hall, feeding Eric Leonard for his header that found the net…Joe Moulden, a freshman defender, has also been on the pitch for all 1,412 minutes of action this season…The Bulldogs were among the nation's last six unbeatens with a 6-0-3 record through nine matches. That placed Butler at No. 19 in both the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer national polls (released Oct. 5). Butler also cracked the NSCAA Coaches Top 25 Poll at No. 21 (released Oct. 6)…head coach Paul Snape is in his fifth season at the helm of Butler's program. He now posts a 37-35-17 record as he has navigated the Bulldogs from the Horizon League to the Atlantic 10 and now to the BIG EAST Conference.

Up Next:  The Bulldogs return to the Butler Bowl to host Xavier Thursday, Nov. 5 for Senior Night. The match will air on BEDN.
