Defense Leads @ButlerWBB to Victory on Saturday

Box Score

ORLANDO, Fla. – Butler limited Clemson to just 15 second half points on Saturday afternoon to defeat the Tigers by the final score of 54-50. All three forwards reached a double figure scoring total to lead the team offensively with the freshmen duo of Brittany Ward and Tori Schickel ending the day with double-double performances.

"Any win is a good win, especially when our guards don't shoot it well," Head Coach Kurt Godlevske said after the game. "Our post players played really well today with two of the three recording a double-double. I thought Brittany was great off the first bounce for us today."

Ward didn't have a great shooting day (4-10), but still managed to impact the outcome with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She shared the team lead in rebounds with Schickel who totaled a team-high 15 points and 11 boards vs the Tigers.

The third member of the high scoring trio was senior Belle Obert. Obert scored 12 points and was in the box score with four offensive rebounds to go along with four on the defensive glass. She added three assists, one block and one steal.

The frontcourt combined to score 37 of Butler's 54 points, but it was the team's overall effort defensively that led to the four-point win. BU outscored Clemson 13-4 in the third quarter which resulted in the Bulldogs limiting the Tigers to just 15 total points over the final 20 minutes of competition.

"Switching to zone defense midway through the first half limited their [Clemson] drives," Godlevske added. "Our guards really buckled down and contained penetration which led to the outcome in the third quarter."

Butler ended the game with five steals and three blocked shots. They simply got stops and kept Clemson off the boards by posting 28 defensive rebounds on their way to outrebounding the Tigers 43-32.

Clemson did have one player go off for 19 points on 7-of-19 shooting. Nelly Perry was all over the court with five rebounds, six assists, four steals and a block.

Butler will return to action tomorrow when they take on host UCF at 2:30 PM. Butler has never lost to the Knights over three all-time meetings.
