Box Score ORLANDO – The Bulldogs outscored the Knights 27-8 in the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon to earn their third win of the season and their second in the 2015 UCF Thanksgiving Classic. Sydney Buck got hot early to score the first 12 points of the game for BU and the sophomore would go on to end the contest with a career-high 23 points.
Seven of Buck's eight made field goals came from 3-point range as the sharpshooter notched 23 points in just 29 minutes of action. The Bulldogs ended the game with 12 made 3-point field goals which included an important bucket from Belle Obert in the later stages of the fourth quarter.
"Sydney carried us in the first half and continued to make big shots for the team in the second," Head Coach Kurt Godlevske said. "Our girls dug in at the end of the third and made play after play all the way through the fourth quarter. They showed a tremendous amount of character!"
Buck was one of three Bulldogs to reach double figures against the Knights as Blaire Langlois and Tori Schickel impacted the game with 11 and 10 points respectively. Langlois made all three of her field goals from distance while adding a pair from the line. Schickel went 3-for-4 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.
Obert and Brittany Ward each ended the contest with eight points. Obert stuffed the box score with a team-high nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in 30 minutes of action.
The game was unique from the opening tip as Buck single-handedly kept Butler in the game by knocking down 3-point field goals. She hit her fourth triple of the game just five minutes into the action to knot the score at 12-12.
Butler would go on to win the opening quarter 19-18, but the Knights would take care of business in both the second and third quarters to open up a 55-44 lead. The largest lead of the game for UCF would come in the final minutes of the third when Zykira Lewis pushed the advantage to 15 points (55-40).
Butler finished off the final two minutes of the third on a 4-0 run, but the lead would move back to 13 points with nine minutes to play in the fourth.
The comeback got underway with a 3-point field goal from Alexa Bailey that trimmed the lead to eight and a Bailey steal would setup Michelle Weaver for a layup that moved the score to 59-53. Buck was the next Bulldog to get involved as she made her lone 2-point field goal with six minutes left in regulation and a 3-point field goal from Langlois just 30 seconds later got Butler within one (59-58).
Zykira Lewis had multiple looks for UCF on the next possession, but Obert would eventually grab the defensive board which allowed Schickel to give Butler the one-point lead on their next possession.
The teams would trade free throws on the next few trips, keeping the game at one possession. The biggest shot of the game would follow from Butler's Belle Obert as the forward stepped back to drain a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play in regulation. Langlois was credited with the assist on the score and UCF would respond by taking a timeout with 44 seconds remaining. The play was drawn up for Lewis, but the talented guard missed the 3-point field goal and Langlois would come in for the rebound.
Langlois got the ball to Bailey who was quickly fouled by Joslyn Massey with 30 ticks left. Bailey stepped to the line and calmly knocked down two free throws to give Butler the six point advantage. That lead would grow to eight as Butler would shutout the Knights for the rest of the game while adding two more from the line to grab the win.
Butler will return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a home game against TCU. Action will be aired live on Fox Sports 2 beginning at 7 PM.
